Wales Sports Day - On Your Marks, Get Set, Let’s Go!

As soon as you stepped through the doors, you could feel it—the buzz, the energy, the joy. Consensus’ first-ever Sports Day in Wales was a huge success, bringing together services from across Wales and the West of England for a day full of fun, friendship, and fantastic moments!

But let’s get one thing straight.

This was no ordinary corporate event, nor another item on the company’s calendar.  This was an idea submitted to The Matchbox, our new innovation platform where everyone gets to share what they’d love to see happen. When Courtney Clayton, a support worker at Pool Cottage, submitted her vision for a sports day… we knew something special was about to unfold as they were encouraged to move forward with their plans.

On Your Marks, Get Set…

Courtney, along with her brilliant co-host Kari Butcher, also a support worker at Pool Cottage, decided to take their idea and run with it (quite literally!). They wanted a day where everyone could join in, no matter their ability, and where we could all connect, laugh, and celebrate being together.

What started as a simple idea turned into something truly magnificent. In just 3 short months, they somehow (tell us your secrets!) pulled together 150 attendees, arranged 7 event stations including skittles, basketball, golf darts and more; and hosted a range of races from the classic egg and spoon to a managers’ dash – everyone had a chance to shine.

Courtney and Kari thought of everything. Every service sported its own colour-coordinated personalised t-shirts. They created custom colouring books, pre-printed certificates, and mini trophies for each team. The equipment – from the basketball hoop to the flag dividers – was lovingly handmade and upcycled by Kari, demonstrating her knack for creativity and commitment to sustainability.

Foodies rejoice—no one went hungry! Local favourites The Grazing Field Grill and Stacie’s Ice Cream Van kept everyone fuelled, along with Lorraine and her family’s tuck shop.

Where every moment matters.

But the real magic was in the little moments: such as the moment where a 61-year-old gentleman stood up from his wheelchair, without explanation, to compete in the flat race. “He did not fear his position in the race or how he would match the speed of others, but his smile was from ear to ear,” Courtney said. “It was clear to see how ecstatic he was to have taken part and clapped over the finish line. It was at that point I knew every worry that went into making this event a successful day was worth it.”

Courtney summed up her feelings perfectly: “We laughed, we shed tears, and ultimately felt such fulfilment in our hearts over how much was achieved by all. We truly believe the special bonds and working relationships between everyone are unmatched. There are some very special people who live and work within Consensus.”

Kari also shared her favourite moments, saying, “Watching colleagues adapt the sports equipment and games to suit everyone’s abilities and seeing those who don’t usually socialise coming out of their shells was heartwarming. It felt like one big family.”

An unforgettable day

The day was filled with smiles, laughter, new connections and old. The atmosphere was electric, the sports hall bursting with energy. Everyone – from the people we support to colleagues support them, and the (rather competitive) senior leadership team – went all in, cheering each other on, making memories, and celebrating each unique ability.

CEO Paula keys said, “What a great day. You should be hugely proud of what you have achieved. Well done Courtney and Kari, and well done team Wales and West!” And honestly, that’s how we all felt—proud, joyful, and full of appreciation for this community of amazing people dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the people we support.

And this is just the beginning…

Courtney and Kari have big plans for next year, aiming to make it even bigger and better. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next! This Sports Day proved that when our support workers bring their passion, creativity, and care to the table, incredible things happen.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, supported, and made this day one to remember, and congratulations to Courtney and Kari for pulling off an absolute cracker!
