The Matchbox: Sparking Innovation Across Consensus

At Consensus, we know that the best ideas can come from anyone, anywhere. With over 100 locations across the UK, we’re committed to tapping into the collective creativity of our incredible team. That’s why we introduced The Matchbox—a new initiative designed to empower every colleague to share their ideas for improving our workplaces and enhancing the lives of the people we support.

What is The Matchbox?

The Matchbox is a way for colleagues to easily submit their ideas—big or small—that could make a difference in our services, improve work processes, or simply bring more joy to the everyday lives of the people we support. Inspired by the story of Samuel Jones, a factory worker whose simple tweak to the matchbox made a big impact, The Matchbox at Consensus is all about recognising and amplifying the great ideas that exist within our team.

And since its launch in November last year, The Matchbox has received an incredible 84 submissions from colleagues across all regions and roles. From these, 16 ideas have already been put into action, 33 are being supported, and others are set aside for future projects.

Sharing, empowering, supporting, here’s a glimpse of The Matchbox outcomes so far;

1. Sharing Ideas Across Services – Kasia’s PositiviTEA Corner

The Matchbox has been a great way to share successful ideas that started in one service but could benefit others across Consensus. One example is the “PositiviTEA Corner”, an idea sparked from the Service Manager at Rowan House, Kasia. Creating a cosy space with tea, treats, and positive messages for any team member needing a little boost, after sharing this initiative internally, other services were inspired to create their own PositiviTEA Corners. Spreading warmth and positivity across Consensus.

2. Empowering Colleagues to Take Action – Emily’s Digital Easter Egg Hunt

The Matchbox isn’t just about submitting ideas; it’s also about empowering colleagues to take the lead in bringing their suggestions to life. A fantastic example of this is the digital Easter egg hunt created by Charlotte-Emily, our Digital Solutions Lead. The hunt, designed to help colleagues get more familiar with our Learning Management System while adding a bit of fun, was implemented with minimal support and received great feedback. Demonstrating how colleagues can take ownership of ideas, and confidently move forward with bringing them to life.

3. Supporting Colleagues to Bring Ideas to Life – The Wales Sports Day

For ideas that need a bit more collaboration or extra resources, The Matchbox provides a way for colleagues to work together to bring these initiatives to life. One support worker in Wales suggested a regional sports day to bring together services from Wales and the West of England. We connected her with the Area Director, who helped coordinate the event with other services. The result was a hugely successful day of fun and connection, showing how The Matchbox can turn individual ideas into shared successes – which we’ll be sharing the exciting results of soon!

The Matchbox has not only empowered our colleagues but has also reinforced our commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration across Consensus. We’re dedicated to making a positive impact, and The Matchbox is one of the ways we’re building a culture of innovation and inclusivity. By encouraging everyone to share their ideas, we’re working together to improve our services, our workplaces, and ultimately, to make every moment matter.
