The full report is available to view via the link below, and here are some of our highlights for you to enjoy:

Outstanding for Caring

One of the most significant highlights from the assessment was the Outstanding rating for Caring.

CQC found that the service was exceptionally caring, with people respected and valued as individuals and empowered as partners in their care.

Inspectors saw staff consistently demonstrating kindness, empathy and compassion, taking the time to understand each person’s individual needs, preferences and emotional wellbeing.

The report highlighted the patience and commitment of staff when supporting people through challenges with daily routines. Staff worked collaboratively to develop personalised visual prompts for one person, helping them transition between activities more smoothly, reducing anxiety and promoting greater independence and confidence.

The assessment also recognised the exceptional commitment of staff to understanding and adapting to people’s individual communication needs. In one example, staff learned a person’s unique language and communication methods, enabling them to express their wishes, make decisions and exercise greater choice and control over their support.

Supporting Independence, Choice and Control

The CQC also recognised the service’s outstanding approach to promoting independence and ensuring people have genuine choice and control over their care, support and wellbeing.

Staff supported people to pursue aspirations that were important to them, including helping one person achieve their goal of taking a holiday abroad.

Following challenges during an initial holiday, staff worked alongside the person to understand what had caused distress, identify triggers and develop personalised strategies. This learning was then used to improve the support provided on their next holiday, which was significantly more positive and enjoyable.

This approach demonstrates the team’s commitment to enabling people to try new experiences, take positive risks and achieve the things that matter to them.

Compassionate and Responsive Support

The assessment also highlighted the team’s ability to respond quickly and sensitively to people’s individual needs.

Inspectors found that staff knew people extremely well and were able to recognise subtle changes in presentation, mood and behaviour. Staff responded promptly and adapted their approach to help people feel safe, reassured and understood.

Highly individualised Positive Behaviour Support plans were also in place, based on each person’s communication methods, needs, triggers and preferred coping strategies.

The CQC found that these approaches had a significant positive impact, with records demonstrating a reduction in periods of distress for people living at the home.

Safe and Effective Support

Alongside the Outstanding rating for Caring, The Old Vicarage achieved a Good rating for Safe.

CQC recognised improvements in the management of incidents, accidents and safeguarding concerns, noting the benefits of a stable and consistent management team with effective oversight.

The assessment found that incidents were reviewed promptly, root causes were considered and appropriate actions were implemented to reduce the risk of recurrence.

People were supported by sufficient numbers of suitably skilled and experienced staff, with recruitment, induction, training and competency processes found to be robust.
