Sustainability across Consensus: One Step at a Time

One step at a time, our services, colleagues, and the people we support are passionately finding ways to create a sustainable future. Whether it’s growing their own tomatoes, nominating a light switch operator in their service, or finding innovative ways to flatten cardboard ready for recycling, the imagination and creativity has been incredible.

Because to create a sustainable future, it takes everyone bringing their small steps to the table and coming together to make a real difference.

Sharing a glimpse of some of the creativity, innovation, and passion for sustainability across Consensus, here’s what everyone’s been up to…

Belstead Mews – One planter at a time.

At Belstead Mews, the team had to put their thinking caps on to find ways to make the most of their garden. Having some rather large trees scattered throughout their garden, the grass was struggling to grow and often ending up as an ideal place for pigs to play – a massive muddy swamp right in the middle! Transforming the area, the team have now laid Astro turf down and added some planters in so everyone can enjoy the garden, and grow some yummy fruit & veg as well.

Dyscarr Grange – One pumpkin at a time.

Onions, freesias, pumpkins – Dyscarr Grange have been planting them all! Getting hard to work transforming their new garden into a haven of sustainability, everyone got involved in tidying the space and enjoying a spot of sunshine. They even came up with a fun idea of painting some of the wood they’d chopped up, showing off their artistic talents to make the garden even more fabulous – demonstrating even wood offcuts can be recycled and used again! We can’t wait to check in on the growth of the pumpkins too, and will hopefully see them being used in October for Halloween.

Kingston House – One plant pot at a time.

For the talented team at Kingston House, they spent an afternoon doing what they love most; arts & crafts. Painting some beautiful plant pots and adding some bright & vibrant flowers, their garden now has the perfect spot for the insects to nestle into. They’ve also been taking great care of their garden, growing and caring for an array of greenery together.

Perrywood House – One rocket at a time.

Harvesting their first load of crops, the team at Perrywood House have been tending to their vegetables – with cress and rocket being the first ones to bloom! Picking their hard work, washing the leaves, and incorporating their hard work into a yummy meal, the first dinner was a lovely lasagna with salad for all to enjoy. We can’t wait to see what other wonders come out of the Perrywood garden.

Heather Holmes – One hanging basket at a time.

Wanting to ensure the front of their home caught the eyes of passerby’s, the team at Heather Holmes got to work on sprucing up the area – adding new plants, arranging beautiful hangings baskets, and plucking all those pesky weeds out. And WOW, what a fantastic job they’ve done!

Gretton House – One potato at a time.

Bringing in the first of the summer veggie’s, Simon & Jennie have been helping Gardener Chris bring in onions, beetroot ad potatoes – ready to be whipped up into a delicious meal in the kitchen! You can’t get much fresher from field to fork, and by the smiles on everyone’s faces we can see their hard work coming to life.

Windsor Avenue – One recycling champion at a time.

Following being crowned the Consensus Sustainability Champion in June, Philip has now received his badge – recognising his hard work and commitment to making Windsor Avenue a more sustainable place. Philip has been wearing the badge every day since, and we’re so happy to see Philip making a positive difference towards creating a sustainable future.

Beech Court – One vegetable at a time.

At Beech Court, the team may as well open their own fruit & veg shop with the amount of goodies they’ve been growing! Tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, corn, peppers… the list is endless. From soil to plate, Beech Court are really demonstrating how we can cut-back on our consumption of food from supermarkets and save money, growing their own source of fruit & veg. We can’t wait to see the beautiful lunch’s & dinners that are made from the food they grow.

Services in Wales – One idea at a time.

Looking at how they can take steps towards a sustainable future, the teams at Lime Grove Apartments and Ty Cwtch were presented with a challenge by Service Manager Judith – see how many steps they can think of to becoming more sustainable. And well, they’ve certainly blown us away. From ensuring TV’s are turned off at the plugs, to installing water tanks in their services, the teams have both highlighted that there’s so many small steps we can all take towards a sustainable future.

One step at a time, thank you to everyone across Consensus for making a difference, and making every moment matter.
