Our Values, Our Future: The Leadership Conference

Last year, we introduced our brand new values. Three words that capture what it means to be Consensus: Kindness, Creativity and Commitment. So at this years leadership conference, we not only put our heads together to plan how to live these values long into the future, but also to take a moment to look back on the amazing things we’ve achieved over the past 20 years!

We spent two days with leaders, department heads and managers from across the country to learn, reflect and celebrate.

Happy Birthday to Us

We had to take a moment before the hard work starts to don the party hats and blow out the candles – it’s our 20th birthday! First order of the day was to pause and rewind not only the things we’ve accomplished in the year since our last conference, but in the two decades since Consensus first opened it’s doors.

Since then, we’ve grown from a small provider into a leading organisation in social care, with today having:

  • 600 people being supported right now
  • Across over 100 services with innovative new models of supported living and residential care
  • Cared for by over 2000 amazing colleagues

Where Every Moment Matters

Every year, we make every moment of our conference matter with workshops dedicated to our goals for the next year – to develop, change and improve for the people who live and work here. This year, we had four amazing workshops, each with a very important focus:

  • Values Led Recruitment & Retention

Every member of team Consensus embodies our values of Kindness, Creativity and Commitment – but how can we bring those values to life before someone starts working with us and throughout their career.

  • Our Commitment to Quality

Putting our heads together to think about how we can embed our commitment to quality in everything we do: quality of life, health and safety and quality environments for people we support.

  • Creative Brilliance

Let’s think outside the box – instead of always doing the same things, how can we use creative thinking to not only solve our problems more efficiently, but come up with new, innovative ways of working?

  • The Power of Kindness

One of our core values and the heart of everything we do. From recognition, to celebration to a simple ‘well done’ – how can we bring more acts of kindness into our daily lives?

Right to Left Thinking

Finding new ways of thinking leads to new ideas and innovation. We’ve already introduced the FISH philosophy and seen the impact it’s had on our teamwork and leadership; so we were very excited to have a special guest at this year’s conference to introduce the concept of ‘Right to Left’ thinking.

A simple notion, that can cause a huge impact – focusing on starting with the solution you want and working backwards rather than just reacting to a situation. Reversing the way we address a problem, situation or goal, we can be more purposeful, mindful and aware in our responses.

We also learned a new way of framing our goals, replacing an old fashioned to-do list with a to-be list than we use right to left thinking on to break down what we’d like to be into easily achievable, understandable steps.

Time to Celebrate

Learning and development might be a priority, but so is celebration! Taking time to recognise the achievements of our colleagues is important – we’ll be sharing the winners of the Consensus Awards very soon but we also made sure there were plenty of chances for our attendees to celebrate each others achievements and ideas including:

  • The Kindness Tree – attendees could leave a kind message for a colleague
  • Creativity Corner – share your own amazing ideas so they can get the recognition they deserve and get the support you need to bring them to life
  • A special award – a moment to appreciate our colleague Lisa on her 30th year in her service – since before Consensus was even born!

Raising voices

People are at the heart of everything we do – so we can’t plan for the future without raising the voices of the people we support and giving them the platform to share their experiences.

We were happy to invite Mani and Gurveer to take the stage and tell us their opinions on what our values mean to someone living in Consensus, how they expect us to embody Kindness, Creativity and Commitment and how we can continue to support them to live the best lives possible. Thank you for your expertise and time.

Thank you to our attendees, speakers and sponsors for making every moment matter. We can’t wait to do it all again.
