Diabetes awareness with Theresa

For World Diabetes Day, Theresa – both a very talented artist and avid content creator is on a mission to educate others on what living with diabetes is like, as well as how it can be managed. In her own words, Theresa explores what diabetes is, and how it can be managed.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a medical condition that affects how your body uses glucose; a sugar that fuels our daily activities. There are two main types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas, meaning people with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin daily to survive.

On the other hand, Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body doesn’t use insulin properly or doesn’t produce enough. It’s often associated with lifestyle factors like diet, exercise and genetics. Managing Type 2 diabetes involves making healthy lifestyle choices and sometimes taking medication.

How can Diabetes be managed?

Controlling your intake – sugary and highly processed foods can cause spikes in your blood sugar leading to long-term complications.

Don’t forget the power of hydration – drinking plenty of water helps regulate blood sugar levels, and supports overall health.

Physical activity – plays a significant role in managing diabetes, so try to incorporate exercise into your daily routine to help lower blood sugar levels and boost your energy.
