Certification Nation Day 2024 at Consensus

It’s Great Place to Work’s Certification Nation Day – and that means celebrating everything that makes Consensus great! Our leadership, our purpose, our culture and most importantly, our people.

Consensus is not just a care provider – we’re a community of amazing people, dedicated to empowering and inspiring the people we support, and our colleagues, too. Our values and passion put people first, and our commitment as an employer is to provide an exceptional working environment for our colleagues who dedicate every day to providing the very best support for the people in their care.

We work hard to create the very best workplaces for colleagues who provide the very best support for the people in their care. It’s this passion for people that, following confidential colleague feedback, has helped us to achieve certification as a Great Place to Work® and one of the UK’s Best Workplaces™.

Here’s what our colleagues had to say:

“We are a Great Place to Work because of the people who work here. Our exceptional colleagues put the needs, aspirations, and outcomes of those we support at the forefront of every day and that is only possible because of the positive culture, the focus on wellbeing and the team working ethos that we have developed.”

Paula Keys, CEO

This year, alongside our Great Place to Work® certification and making our debut on the UK’s Best Workplaces™ 2024 list, we also secured a place on four more lists following confidential colleague feedback. Let’s take a look:

Best Workplaces for Development

At Consensus, we’re committed to empowering our colleagues to unlock their full potential and achieve their aspirations, achieving #33 on the 2024 list.

We recognise that a career in social care takes many forms, and provide a range of training and development opportunities, tailored to your role, including accredited qualifications and bespoke training programs. Whether you’re interested in developing your leadership skills, enhancing your everyday knowledge, or pursuing a career in a specialised area, Consensus Academy will be here to support you every step of the way.

Meet Emmanuel, Registered Manager at Valley House. Starting his career back in 2017 as a support worker at Vale House, he has climbed the Consensus career ladder into Senior Support Worker and Deputy Manager roles, Emmanuel is now completing his Level 5 Leader in Adult Care qualifications and in his first CQC inspection as manager, the report read ‘The registered manager was described as ‘special’ in relation to their work at the service on more than one occasion’.

Best Workplaces for Women

We’re proud of our diverse workforce, and celebrate the inspiring women who care, lead, and succeed with us every day. Whether it’s supporting colleagues to navigate menopause or ensuring equal opportunities for training and career development – we’re proud of being a truly Great Place to Work for everybody.

We strive to create a culture where everyone, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, age, religion, is provided with the opportunities they deserve and receives the right support to do just that, working with talented people, so many of whom are women.

One reason for placing 17th on the Best Workplace for Women list is our focus on menopause – committing to making sure anyone going through Menopause has the support they need at work.

  • Our regular Menopause Meet-Ups offer a place to get advice and tips or just a friendly ear from other colleagues going through the same experience.
  • Our Wellbeing Coach offers 1-on-1 sessions to help colleagues navigate working through the Menopause, or to be a sounding board when you need it.
  • In 2023, we celebrated World Menopause Day at our Central Support Office with webinars, activities and games to get everyone together and talking about menopause.
  • And in 2024, we’re launching a new Menopause Policy detailing how and when we will support our colleagues during this time.

Best Workplaces for Wellbeing

We believe the key to providing exceptional care those we support is by first providing exceptional care to our colleagues. By creating a supportive environment that prioritises wellbeing, injects fun, and exudes appreciation for everything our colleagues do – we enable them to reflect the same level of care and dedication towards the people they support, bringing joy to every day. That’s why we’ve achieved a place on the Best Workplaces for Wellbeing List 2024, coming in at 30th place.

One of the many ways in which we have been able to deliver this is through the continuous growth of our network of Mental Health First Aiders in services and departments across the UK – ensuring colleagues have the support they need when they need it.

We now have 53 MHFAiders who complete regular training and reviews to make sure they can provide the best mental health support and advice to any of their colleagues who request it – whether it’s just a chat, finding the service you need or a bit of advice on wellbeing and work.

We’re normalising conversations about mental health and promoting a supportive atmosphere – prioritising your wellbeing.

“It’s enormously fulfilling to know you are making a positive difference in the lives of the people you support. I love my job and made the right decision joining Consensus.”

Best Workplaces in Healthcare

People are at the heart of everything we do at Consensus. Our purpose is to provide the highest quality of care for adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs across the UK, making every moment matter every day for the people we support.

Here is just one example of the amazing outcomes from across Consensus – let us introduce to you, David.

David has always had dreams, the most important of all being a trip to Turf Moor to watch Burnley play (and win!). But having lived in a secure hospital setting for over four decades, dreams were all they were, until he stepped foot inside his forever home at Consensus. Meeting the team and planning the move in advance, his new apartment was decorated with his beloved claret and blue, meaning move-in day was smiles all round – ready and raring to go bring those dreams to life.

David has fully embraced this new chapter of his life, and is enjoying gaining independence and learning new skills. And his mantra since moving into his new apartment? “I’m living my best life.”
