Apprenticeships Focus: Stephen

As part of National Apprenticeships week, we wanted to shine a light on some of our fantastic colleagues who have completed their apprenticeships at Consensus – furthering their professional development and learning new skills to support them in their roles.

Starting his career as a Support Worker for Consensus and now the Service Manager at Hampton Road, Stephen has completed not one, but two apprenticeships, and is committed to making every moment matter for the people we support, everyday.

What has your career journey at Consensus been like?

“I started with Consensus as a support worker in our day centre in Magor, before transferring to London to work at Hampton Road. Consensus were flexible with my shifts, allowing me to continue my other profession as an Ice Hockey player which was great! A few years went by and a Team Leader position became available, and after some encouragement from my team I applied and got the position, which quickly into a Team Co-Ordinator as the previous manager loved my skills and personality. After 4 years of being happy as the Co-Ordinator/Deputy Manager and working with a few different managers, I was encouraged by Senior Management to go for the position – and now another 4 years later I’m managing 2 services, and helping support new managers into Consensus.”

What inspired you to apply for an apprenticeship?

“So far I’ve completed two apprenticeships at Consensus! I was accepted to do my Level 3 in Health & Social Care whilst working as a Support Worker, and the second in Management. Both apprenticeship courses enabled me to have a greater understanding of the Health Care Sector, and presented me with new challenges to work through to advance my career.”

What are the best skills you learnt through your apprenticeship?

“I learnt that the knowledge I had absorbed through just working and training in the care sector was significant to me completing both apprenticeships – you learn so much on the go!”

How do you feel the apprenticeship has supported your career at Consensus?

“I feel Consensus have always giving me an opportunity to progress and I have taken advantage of their support and encouragement to progress further.”

And finally, what’s your favourite moment been at Consensus?

“The best day is always the Sports Day event we do every year. where we get people from other services to join us in some light hearted games which always end up going drastically wrong in a comical way! The feedback from the people we support and families is always great, and puts a smile on everyone’s faces.”

We've partnered with our training provider, Realise, to bring our colleagues everything they need to know about getting started with an apprenticeship. Head to their website to find out more about Realise and the training they offer.
