Say Hello to Bernie - Referrals Team Manager

Say hello to Bernie Gilligan, our dedicated & passionate Referrals Team Manager. Working in social care for the past 23 years, Bernie joined #TeamConsensus 6 months ago – bringing a wealth of experience in referrals, assessments, and also in operations. Having studied Psychology at degree level and spent a number of years working as an Integrative Relational Counsellor, her background has not only positively impacted her own personal development, but those around her.

Working closely with the referrals team to maximise occupancy in our services, Bernie supports the team to promote vacancies, respond to incoming referrals, and carries out assessments to find the perfect place for the people we support. Thriving in her role, Bernie shared “It is rewarding when all goes according to plan and individuals thrive as they settle into their new homes. – and we love to hear it!

An excellent person to have around in a crisis, Bernie’s strong social conscience and keen sense of justice really does enhance people’s wellbeing. Described as approachable, receptive, helpful & calm by colleagues, hear from Bernie about her role at Consensus;

“I practice Mindfulness daily.”

Favourite Quote:

Best Advise You’ve Been Given

What’s her favourite thing about working at Consensus?

“It is undoubtedly the people.  The culture in Consensus is a good fit for me and reflects my own values.  Everywhere you look throughout the entire organisation there are constant reminders of the importance of wellbeing, having fun and of various benefits to support staff, of kindness and friendliness.  FISH philosophy is alive and kicking in Consensus – I love it.”

What has been her biggest achievement at Consensus?

“Late last year we promoted services that could accommodate emergency referrals.  This was a huge team effort in partnership with Operations.  Just before Christmas we received a referral for a 17 year old individual who found themselves in a very difficult situation, resulting in them being homeless.  This was an emotional and stressful time for the individual and their Social Worker. I highly commend the staff involved for their swift and confident approach in supporting this move which happened within 2 days and in time for Christmas.”

What is the most important thing about your role?

“The most important thing is to safely, competently and with integrity maximise occupancy in services. This ultimately means offering individuals the opportunity to have a brand new home, supported in first class environments by staff who are wholly committed to supporting them within an organisation accredited as “a great place to work”. An added benefit is that job opportunities are created for local communities as individuals move into services. It is rewarding when all goes according to plan and individuals thrive as they settle into their new homes.”

And her favourite moment so far?

“Those first few weeks when I had the opportunity to meet the Referrals team members and the wider teams.  Everyone was so welcoming, the induction was incredibly well organised, all very much appreciated, I remember feeling so comfortable and at ease.”
